What is Polystyrene?

Polystyrene (PS) refers to the polymer synthesized by free radical polymerization of styrene monomer with the chemical formula (C8H8)n.

It is a colorless and transparent thermoplastic with a glass conversion temperature higher than 100°C, which is widely used in the manufacture of various disposable containers and disposable foam lunch boxes that need to withstand boiling water temperatures. Polystyrene includes regular PS, foaming polystyrene (EPS), high impact polystyrene (HIPS) and inter-gauge polystyrene (SPS).

Ordinary polystyrene materials are non-toxic, odorless, colorless and transparent particles with excellent electrical insulation, remarkable processing fluidity, especially high transparency with a light transmittance of more than 90%. The disadvantages of ordinary polystyrene are brittleness, low impact strength, susceptibility to stress cracking, and poor heat and boiling water resistance.

HIPS is a copolymer of styrene and butadiene, where butadiene acts as a dispersed phase to increase the impact strength of the material, while the product is opaque.

SPS is a new type of polystyrene, which uses metallocene catalysts to form a mutually homogeneous structure, and belongs to engineering plastics with excellent performance.

Application

Due to its advantages of transparency, cheapness, rigidity, insulation, and good printability, PS is widely used in the light industry market, daily decoration, lighting instructions and packaging.

PS is also a raw material for membranes with high porosity, average pore size and mechanical properties.

In addition, PS can be used in powder and emulsion cosmetics because of its perfect compressibility, which enhances powder adhesion.

As an advanced filler, PS can replace talc and silica to impart radiance and lubrication to the skin.

At the same time, PS is an excellent electrical insulating material and thermal insulating material, which can be made into various instrument housings, lamp covers, photochemical instrument parts and capacitor dielectric layers. Furthermore, polystyrene-based microspheres can be used as oxygen sensors for precise analysis of dissolved oxygen in certain liquids and for monitoring cellular respiration.

PS is known as one of the five most widely used general-purpose plastics in the world. Currently, the development of polystyrene has the following characteristics: large-scale production equipment, intelligent production control, and product specialization. What are polymers?

A polymer or resin is a chemical compound containing molecules that are linked together in long and repetitive chains. Because of this special structure, polymers have unique properties that can be designed for different applications.

Polymers are both man-made and naturally occurring. For example, rubber is a natural polymer that has been used for thousands of years. Another natural polymer, shellac is a resin that is produced by the lac insect in India and Thailand and is used as a paint primer, sealant and varnish.

Polymer structure

Many common polymers are composed of hydrocarbons, compounds of carbon and hydrogen. These polymers are specifically made of carbon atoms linked together in long chains. Due to the carbon nature of the structure of these compounds, one or more other atoms can be attached to each of the carbon atoms in the main body.

There are polymers that contain only carbon and hydrogen atoms. Polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, polystyrene and polymethylpentene are examples of these. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has chlorine attached to an all-carbon core, and Teflon contains fluorine attached to an all-carbon body.

Sometimes the subgroups connect two chains together instead of hanging from one polymer chain, which is called cross-linking. They mostly have a strengthening role in the structure of polymers, for example, they make it difficult to melt the polymer. However, the longer the crosslinks, the more flexible these compounds become.

The most common natural polymer on earth is the cellulose polymer, which is an organic compound found in the cell walls of plants and used to produce paper products, textiles, and other materials such as cellophane.

Polymer properties

Depending on the type of application, polymers with different characteristics can be made and some of their beneficial properties can be used. These features are described below:

Reflectivity: Some polymers are used to produce reflective films that are used in a variety of light-related technologies.

Impact resistance: Strong plastics that can withstand transportation are very suitable for making luggage, all kinds of protectors, car bumpers and more.

Brittleness: Some forms of polystyrene are hard and brittle and deform with heat.

Transparency: Transparent polymers, including polymer clay, are often used in arts and crafts.

Malleability: Unlike brittle polymers, ductile polymers can deform without breaking apart. Metals such as gold, aluminum and steel are known for their malleability. Although not as strong as other polymers, ductile polymers are useful for many purposes.

Elasticity: Natural and synthetic rubbers have elasticity, which makes them ideal products for the production of car tires and similar products.

Types of polymers:

Polyethylene (PE)

Polypropylene (PP)

Polycarbonates (PC)

Polystyrene (PS)

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)

Application of polymers

Some of the important applications of polymers in daily life include the following:

Polypropylene is used in a wide range of industries such as textiles, packaging, stationery, plastics, aircraft, construction, ropes, toys, etc.

Polystyrene is one of the most common plastics that is actively used in the packaging industry. Bottles, toys, containers, trays, disposable cups and plates, cabinets are among the daily products made of polystyrene. It is also used as an insulator.

The most important application of polyvinyl chloride is the construction of sewer pipes. It is also used as insulation in electrical cables. Polyvinyl chloride is used in clothing and furniture, and has recently become popular for making doors and windows.

Urea-formaldehyde resins are used to make glue, molds, multi-layer sheets, unbreakable containers, etc. Glyptal is used to make paint, coating and varnish. Bakelite is used to make electrical switches, kitchen products, toys, jewelry, firearms, computer disks, etc.
